foursquare API

foursquare API and ColdFusion component

I was working on a ColdFusion project that involved foursquare API.  I have heard of foursquare before but never poked around with the API methods as I have done with youtube, facebook, and twitter.  You can easily find API solutions for these social networking sites in most technologies except ColdFusion.   I was very close to writing my own ColdFusion wrapper for this project; fortunately for me, I came across the ONLY solution to foursquare API in ColdFusion by Andy Matthews called foursquareCFC.  It saved me about 5 hours and I am happy to give it a little more exposure.

Anyways, I extracted the users’ checkins, tips and shout for a given venue.  I have a list of 500+ venues but foursquare API limits 200 API calls per hour for a given IP address.  I used venue detail method to get some of the data but it requires authentication to get some of the sensitive data such as checkins and shout.  This is where Andy’s foursquareCFC wrapper becomes very useful.  It literally takes 30 mins to plug it in and dump either XML or JSON formatted output.

BP Oil Spill – exactly how much oil is leaking?

BP Oil Spill Chart by Das Nobel

It’s been nearly two months since BP’s oil rig exploded and they have yet to find a resolution to stop the crude oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico.  Citizens of the US want to know – exactly how much oil is leaking?

You are not going to get an answer from an incompetent group such as BP execs.  Initially, BP provided a number that was far from the truth.  Thanks to the Congressional hearing committee – BP provided a live feed of the crude gushing for the experts to generate a ballpark estimate.

Take a look at the motion chart I generated that illustrates my estimate along with USGS, NOAA and BP.  With Google Docs and Gap Minders motion chart – I was able to plug-in numbers from April 20th to Aug 9.  The reason I picked Aug as the end date is because BP is expecting their relief well to stop the leaking within that week if all goes well.  In order to utilize the motion chart:
- make sure X-axis displays the Time (from dropdown)
- color – select unique colors
- size – Gal/Day
- you can trace if you select entities (optional)

The InfoMania TechReport is a satirical news segment on Current TV.  I came across this video for while but now I decided to write on this considering Facebook just updated its’ privacy settings.  People are already expressing their disapproval over this new change.  One thing for sure – the Facebook community, more or less, does NOT like CHANGE.  Check out the funny clip by Ben Hoffman from InfoMania.  Brilliant!

While it is important for Facebook to keep its’ users happy; however, it cannot afford to lose sight of adaptability.  Recently I read an interesting blog post (Is it time to reimagine your product/service?)  by Rashmi Sinha, founder of SlideShow, where she thinks that in order for the social networks to be competitive – they must adapt even if it loses a few users.  The idea is what would you do if you were to launch facebook today?  You must adapt – thats true for any products or services.

Adaptability is essential to continuous success whether the marginal mass like it or not.  Or else Facebook will become obsolete just as MySpace, FriendSter, and Hi5.
